What we did today

·        Today, we worked on a worksheet about different kinds of medieval stories and we had to read seven stories to see which one we liked the best so that we can read it over winter break.

Why we did this

·        We worked on this story worksheet because Ms. Lees needed to know what our reading level is. We did this because we need to read a book over the winter break.

Connections

·        This would be useful for finding reading levels for the future. We would probably need to write this kind of thing in maybe other classes or in future humanities classes to see about our reading level.

Homework

·        We didn’t have anything for homework except posting on Blogger.

Monday, 12 December 2011

Today on Monday we watched the last fifteen minutes of "The First Knight" and for the rest of the class we practiced our group discussions, writing individual answers in groups of five or six. Each group received one or two quotes and a question in which first they had to answer in writing on there own and then one person would write while the rest of the group discussed and answered the question.

homework: There was no homework except for blogs.

09/12/11

On Friday, we did the Canspell Spelling Bee... that's it.

We did this for some people to get an opportunity to advance to the finals, gain experience, etc. if they wanted. And for everyone to get some knowledge of how a spelling bee works, and give them a chance to learn some new words. Also, it'll help some of the competitive people who find spelling boring to make it fun.

Homework... None except blog posts

So guys, remember, pancake breakfast at school next Friday!

Congratulations to the finalists of our class!

What we did today

·        Everyone practiced note-taking for Pathways pages 9 to 20 - Outlining, 20 to 30 -  Mapping, and 31 to 36 - Cornell.

·        We practiced 20 words from our Canspell booklet.

·        Ms. Lees showed us a video about Cornell note-taking and other note taking information videos.

·        Some people did their portfolio interviews.

Why we did this

·        We practiced note-taking for Pathways because we needed to learn new ways to take notes and we also needed to get used to note taking for the future.

·        We practised Canspell because we have the class spelling bee in one and a half weeks and we have only practised once.

·        Ms. Lees showed us a video about Cornell note-taking because most of us didn’t know how to use Cornell note-taking.

Connections

·        We will need to take notes in almost every subject and it would be useful for future business.

·        Spelling is important because we use it for every subject.

·        Cornell note-taking will be useful for almost every subject and it might help for future business.

Homework

·        For homework you just need to study the geography test.

November 28th, 2011

So guys, I posted a schedule for this week on the sidebar, so if you can check it out that'd be great.

What we did today
  • Some people didn't complete their portfolios STILL, so quite a bit of people worked on organizing and attaching things to complete their portfolios.
  • We worked on writing persuasive paragraphs. Persuasive paragraphs are paragraphs when your trying to argue a point, trying to convince the reader to think a certain way, all while giving supporting reasons.

"example-Students over 16 who do not wish to attend high school should not be required to do so. By the age 16 most students are either "sold" on the value of school or they do not see much sense in it. If a student doesn't care for school, he isn't likely to learn much, and he will probably be resentful and disruptive. Because of this, much of the teachers' time is spent on disrupters instead of on those who want to learn. This situation tends to make a school a disciplinary institution rather than a place for learning. For these reasons, we should open the doors and "set free" those who don't value education."

Why we did this:
  • We should've been started on portfolio conversations quite a bit of time ago, but people weren't finished, so that needs to be finished.
  • As for the persuasive paragraph, we need to learn how to use all the different types of paragraphs for future assignments. It will develop out writing skills as well.

Connections:
  • By doing portfolios... which was somewhat hard to organize, we know how to organize things in other subjects... and in future jobs as well?
  • We use English... and paragraphs, which is... writing. In every subject. And pretty much everywhere in Canada. Using proper paragraphs in job applications may show knowledge :)

    Homework & Tips

  • Remember to stop by in the morning to... Mr. Pocock's room I believe? To finish your portfolios. HURRY IT UP!
  • Finish all of your paragraph exercises if you aren't finished! Make sure to do your outlines as well!
  • And Colin, make sure to post tomorrow!

That's it for me today :)

Why we did this?

11/22/11

What we did today

Today, we had to make a heart map or a web or a diagram to list ideas for what is important to you. Then we got a worksheet about paragraphs and we went over the narrative paragraph part. After that we needed to write a narrative paragraph about what happened in our life.

Why did we do this?

We made a diagram because we needed to brainstorm ideas about what is important, so we could write a paragraph about what was important in our life. We went over the narrative paragraph worksheet because some people didn't know how to make a narrative paragraph. We wrote a narrative paragraph because we needed to learn how to make a narrative paragraph.

Reflections / connections

Today, we didn't do anything that was complicated so I understood everything because I know how to make a narrative paragraph to explain important things that happened in my life. We usually write different kinds of paragraphs in other classes to gather information into a couple of paragraphs.

Homework

Don't forget to do as much as you can for the South America map.

11/21/11

What We Did:
Today, we: 1.)finished off our portfolios (for some people)
2.)worked on our south america land form maps
3.)discussed how to use blogs.

Why did we do this?
We finished our portfolios because some people didn't finish them
We worked on our south america land form maps to review following instructions.
We discussed how to use our blogs because we didn't know how to use our blogs properly until now.

Connections:
Today, we basically did a refresher on everything. That helps us review everything, like using notes. Reviewing things is good because then you can be sure you have memorized something. You can review things in pretty much every aspect of life. In other classes, you can review things such as notes as well. By reviewing your day, you can... tidy up your thoughts.
